Undergraduate Achievement Award – $1000 Award

Eligibility: Recipient shall be an undergraduate student who is enrolled full time in food science, nutrition, food engineering, food packaging, food service or other related curriculum leading to a bachelor degree.

Selection: Shall be made on the basis of both academic and non-academic performance.

Clifford L Bedford Scholarship – $1000 Award

Eligibility: Recipient shall be an undergraduate student who is enrolled full-time in food science, food engineering, food packaging, foods and nutrition, or food service program leading to associate or bachelor’s degrees and intends to pursue a career in the food industry and is a member of the Great Lakes IFT Section.

Selection: Shall be made on the basis of both academic and non-academic performance.

Master of Science Achievement Scholarship – $1000 Award

Eligibility: Recipient shall be a Master’s of Science candidate in Food Science, Technology or other closely related field in good academic standing and a member of the Great Lakes IFT Section.

Selection: Shall be made on the basis of academic performance, research accomplishments and professional potential in the food industry.

Ph.D Achievement Scholarship – $1000 Award

Eligibility: Recipient shall be a Ph.D candidate in Food Science, Technology or other closely releated field in good academic standing and a member of the Great Lakes IFT Section.

Selection: Shall be made on the basis of academic performance, research accomplishments and professional potenial in the food industry.

Great Lakes Section Diversity Scholarship – $1000 Award

Eligibility: Recipient must be a full-time minority student (either graduate or undergraduate) with a declared curriculum of food science, nutrition, food packaging, food engineering or other related disciplines with plans to pursue a career in the food industry.

Selection: Shall be made on the basis of both academic and non-academic performance.

Great Lakes Section Active Student Member Scholarship – $1000 Award

Eligibility: Recipient must be a full time student (either graduate or undergraduate) with a declared curriculum of food science, nutrition, food packaging, food engineering or other related disciplines with plans to pursue a career in the food industry and show active involvement in the Great Lakes Section of IFT as well as other activities of IFT. A Student receiving this award is also eligible for one other scholarship previously state.

Selection: Shall be made on the basis of both academic and non-academic performance.

*In the event of a tie for any of the awards, the award will be split equally between the tied applicants, but will not be less than $500 per awardee.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS FEBRUARY 5

Basic Requirements For All Awards:

1) At least a 3.0 GPA
2) Student Membership in IFT
3) Enrolled in an accredited Michigan college or university

Selection of all award recipients will be made by the Scholarship Awards Committee as outlined by the GLS-IFT by-laws.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1. Review eligibility requirements above for each award before submitting your application.

2. Submit the following by February 5:

a. The completed application form.

b. A signed personal statement (in pdf form), which should not exceed one page. The personal statement must separately discuss and summarize at least the following topics:

1) The applicant’s academic program and GPA;
2) The applicant’s current research (if applicable);
3) The applicant’s future plans and career goals;
4) The applicant’s extracurricular activities which may include involvement in community, university/college activities, GLS activities or national IFT activities; and
5) The applicant’s work experience.

The personal statement may further include any other information the applicant may wish to share with the scholarship committee that relates to the merits of the application.

c. Two signed letters of recommendation (in pdf form) uploaded directly by the person who is recommending the student. Letters must be from faculty members or employers familiar with the scholarship applicant’s training and other abilities. The letters should not be from a relative of the applicant.
